The published songs of Alfred Williams

Alfred and Mary Williams, 1924 The photograph that accompanies this article is of Alfred Williams and his wife Mary, taken in their garden at South Marston in 1924.  The usual impression given of Williams is of a thwarted individual, of a dour individual whom life had treated harshly.  And all that may be true.  But he must have been a convivial individual to have persuaded so many singers to share their songs with him.  The photograph shows them both relaxed, smiling and at ease with the photographer.  My thanks to the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre for permission to reproduce it.  Copyright in the photograph rests the Centre and may only be reproduced with their permission.

Where did it all start?

Having grown up in Birkenhead on Merseyside, Liverpool was where I started my career as a librarian where a rich mix of folk singing in the Sixties was part of the attractions of the city.  A two year interlude in London led to 32 years working for Wiltshire library service.  After reading Folksongs of the Upper Thames I became aware of the Alfred Williams manuscripts, at that time held in Swindon Reference Library, then later at Wiltshire and Swindon Record Office in Trowbridge, the county town, and latterly in the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre at Chippenham.

Wiltshire is an interesting county when it comes to traditional material.  There must have been a lot of it about, but like today's holiday makers, who pass through the county on their way to the West Country, folk song collectors appear largely to have done the same.  Apart from Gardiner [23], Vaughan-Williams [20] and Hill [9], none, apart from Alfred Williams, collected more than low single figures.

The project: opening up the archive

My primary concern, before I even started transcribing the material was to ensure that it would be available to the widest possible audience.  These songs are part - in the words of Marghanita Laski, who presented a radio series in the 1980s on traditional material -of everybody's songs.  I did consider establishing an independent web site which had many advantages but had one major drawback.  It would be dependent upon my being able to continue funding the domain.  Should that end, for we are all mortal, the material would disappear again.  If however if it could be placed in an environment that would outlast me, then it would remain available as long as the host, or its successors existed.  It was this consideration that led me back to my former colleagues in Wiltshire Council.

Prior to my retirement I was, with two colleagues, Mike Marshman, County Local Studies Librarian and Howie Milburn, Database and Web Technical Consultant Manager, in the council's corporate IT department, involved in the development of the Community History website, a content rich local studies treasure trove.  This database driven resource uses the focus of the civil parish to present data, whether published, un-published or newly written for specific parishes, about local communities.  The modular nature of the website meant that it was possible to integrate the song and play texts in the Folk Arts section seamlessly into the structure through the creation of new database tables.  For songs collected in Wiltshire there are links, for example, from the Crudwell parish pages to the songs collected from Mrs Prudence Goodfield, Samuel Hinder, Mrs Russell and Ann Sparrow, and from each of them to potted and somewhat limited biographical sketches of the singers.

Having agreed the technical feasibility and structures all that was necessary was to ensure compatibility with other parts of the Community History Website.  That done I started on the transcriptions.  The database can be searched by: song title, community where collected, singer from whom collected, the collector, the Roud number [where known] and by any word in the verses and notes fields.  It is possible to list data by each of the above apart from the verse and notes field.

While not the focus of this article, the data set has been enhanced by material collected in Wiltshire, or from singers identified with the county collected by Akerman, Barrett, Blunt, Broadwood, Brown, Collinson, Court, Gardner, Hammond, Hill, Hobbs, Kennedy, Lovelock, Oliver, Pafford, Seeger and MacColl, Sharp, Vaughan-Williams, and Whitlock.  Where music has been identified, e.g.  Hammond, Vaughan-Williams etc, there are jpeg images of my transcriptions of the music.

When the manuscripts had been transcribed I formally offered the material to the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre, free of charge, as a community resource.  That offer was accepted.  All the songs and play texts held in the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre file, WSRO: 2598/36 were transcribed.  They can all be found on the following website:

http://history.wiltshire.gov.uk/community/folkintro.php

The initial transcriptions were from the manuscripts, not Folk Songs of the Upper Thames. Later comparisons were made with the printed sources.  Where there are differences in the text, these are given in the notes, unless they were very minor, e.g.  a comma instead of a dash at the end of a line.

The project: transcription

Phase 1: the manuscripts and the books

I started transcribing the Alfred Williams archive in 2004 with the initial intention of just transcribing the songs in the Bathe / Clissold Index that bore the Wt [Wiltshire] prefix.  Colin H Bathe and Ivor Clissold were long associated with the Swindon Folk Song Club.  They compiled an index to the songs while the collection was housed in Swindon Reference Library.  However, it quickly became apparent from Williams' own notes to the songs that the prefix did not necessarily reflect the geographical distribution of his collecting activities.  Many were compound texts from a number of sources, for example, Broken Down Gentleman attributed both to Timothy Tassel, Wanborough, Wiltshire, and Charles Hambidge [collected as Hambridge], Buscot, Berkshire.  Some were collected from singers who were given more than one location, e.g.  Shadrach Haydon, who almost certainly was collected in Bampton, yet is described by Williams additionally as from both Hatford and Lyford in Berkshire.

Many thanks are due to my former colleagues in the Record Office / History Centre for the encouragement they gave me during the four years it took to do the transcriptions, to Malcolm Taylor at the Vaughan-Williams Memorial Library, EFDSS, for his and his staff's assistance in identifying additional Wiltshire material.  I was greatly assisted by Andrew Bathe who very kindly provided me with an electronic copy of his thesis, Pedalling in the dark: the folk song collecting of Alfred Williams in the Upper Thames Valley, 1914 – 1916, University of Sheffield, National Centre for English Cultural Tradition, 2006, and to Steve Roud who very kindly supplied me with an electronic copy of his database of songs.  Last but not least the task of anyone working on the Williams collection was made much easier by the gathering of all the music texts into one part of the archive by Colin Bathe and Ivor Clissold.

Publication, 2008

The transcriptions were published on the website at a formal launch in September 2008, ninety two years after Williams finished the majority of his collecting.  They have been updated since as new material came to light.  The launch included a set by Chippenham Morris and in the evening a concert which included contributions from Mervyn Grist and Sid Bloomfield, well known at the Village Pump Festival, who performed as Merv and Sid, and Bob and Gill Berry, well known as performers in their own right as well as being the organisers of the Chippenham Folk Festival.

Intermission

Between 2008 and 2010 I was researching the names and backgrounds of singers collected by Williams and others using the online census data and latterly the indexes to births deaths and marriages [BMD] online.  The BMD indexes only give references to register entries, these can only be accessed for a fee, and that is an expensive undertaking for hundreds of individuals.  There are limitations to this approach about which Andrew Bathe, who has done much significant work in this area, most helpfully advised me.

My intention in using the census data was to try to focus upon the singer, not just the songs.  While the data gathered leaves much to be desired, it does flesh out aspects of the singers' lives.  There may be some doubt about the identification of some singers.  This is particularly the case with married female singers.  For example, Williams collected So Early in the Morning from a Mrs Pitt.  This may well be Mrs Esther Pitts, née Jackson, born in Sherborne, Gloucestershire between July and September 1852 [birth index online].  Andrew Bathe gives 25th July 1852 but provides no maiden name.  This approach may be seen as contentious by some, but this is perhaps less a matter of certainties, more stimulating opportunities for cooperative exploration in this field.  Any constructive comments, additional information or corrections about this area of the web site are most welcome.  Much remains to be done but, for example, the descendants of Elijah Iles of Inglesham and Thomas Boucher [collected as Bowker] of Faringdon contacted me with additional material they had gathered on their relatives.  One of my hopes was that there would be contributions from others to enhance the data set, these being examples of that.

While not directly the subject addressed here, there are many instances of the mis-interpretation of names both by collectors and census enumerators.  For example, T Bowker [Williams] Thomas Boucher [Census]; Frederick, James, John and William Falconer [Williams] – Faulkner [Census]; Charles Hambridge [Williams] – Hambidge [Census]; Henry Leech [Williams] – Leach [Census]; Henry and Leah Serman [Williams] – Sirman [Census]; Thomas Wayne [Williams] – Wain [Census].  Williams was not alone in this.  A simple illustration is provided by the singer Polly Gard collected by Gardiner at Tisbury.  A search for Gard provided no appropriate result.  However, she is probably Mary A Gurd [Polly being a diminutive of Mary] who was living in the Tisbury Workhouse in 1901, aged 57, she worked as a washerwoman and is described in that year's census as feeble minded.  Gurd is also a fairly common name in Wiltshire.

Phase 2: the Wilts and Gloucestershire Standard [WGS]

In 2010 I started to examine the songs published in WGS between 16th October, 1915 and 26th August 1916 noting any textual differences if any between the manuscript, the newspaper and the two books, Folk Songs of the Upper Thames and Round About the Upper Thames.  Perhaps the most poignant moment in this task was transcribing the eight songs published on 1st July, 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme, the significance of which would not have been known on that day anywhere in England.

In the course of this undertaking I made a number of interesting discoveries.  A number of song texts, that are listed as missing from the manuscript collection in the Bathe / Clissold Index, I found published in the newspaper.  These are listed below.  If you click on the title, the text of the song will appear:

As I Walked out one May Morning [Or T Stands for Thomas - WGS and FSUT differ]
Down in Moorfields
Fanny Blair
Meet Me by Moonlight Alone
My Father was Twice Married
Pressed Off to War
Spider and the Fly
Wiltshire Labourers

In addition there were two songs not formerly listed as having been collected by Williams.  These are:

Dumble Dum Dary [not Dick of Taunton Dene]
Sailor Boy Just come from Sea

This suggests that this is the first time that a comprehensive examination of the newspaper file in relation to the manuscripts has been undertaken.  Andrew Bathe makes no, or very brief, references made to them in his thesis.  Nor apparently, was the newspaper file examined by Bathe and Clissold, otherwise they would have included the references in their index.

The texts of the songs printed in the WGS accompany this article.  Alternatively, they can all be found by following the link given above.  Notes are given to each song derived from those given provided by Alfred Williams and from my own examination of the manuscript file, the WGS file and the other published sources.

Songs in print

Alfred Williams collected or refers to hearing a total of 812 titled songs, catches and fragments.  This figure is derived from the listing developed by Bathe and Clissold which I have expanded slightly to accommodate a number of songs not previously listed.  There are three principal published sources of his material, the 44 songs which appeared in the Wilts and Gloucestershire Standard [WGS] between 2nd October, 1915 and 3rd September, 1916, a total of 436 songs, Round About the Upper Thames [RAUT], 1922, 10 songs, and the best known, Folk songs of the Upper Thames [FSUT], 1923, 267 songs.  There is substantial overlap in the titles published in both WGS and FSUT but what is surprising is the number of items that were not published in the newspaper but which made their way into the book.  Set out here are, in a tabular form, which can be cross checked against the web site, the 484 songs published by Williams.  I arrive at this number by only counting a song sung by a singer or singers once, e.g.  A-Begging Buttermilk I Will Go or Ape, Lion, Fox and Ass.  Where a song is sung by different singers and has a different Bathe / Clissold number it is counted separately, e.g.  Barbara Allen, sung by Iles [Wt 388], Mills [Gl 144] and Tanner [Ox 205], in this case three times.  From this it follows that 324 songs have not appeared in print before publication on the web site.

Andrew Bathe makes several references in his bibliography to song titles being published in the Oxford Times.  With the exception of Green Sleeves and Yellow Lace [noted as the mummers' song to the Aston Mummers' play] no text is given for the songs mentioned.  The words of the song do not appear in the manuscript and so this also is an addition to the items collected by Williams.

In the following table the abbreviations used are:

FSUT: Folk songs of the Upper Thames
OT: Oxford Times
RAUT: Round about the Upper Thames
WGS: Wilts and Gloucestershire Standard

The headings are:

Number: the part number and sequence in the Wilts and Gloucestershire Standard
Title: title of song or piece
Source: the published source as given above
Date: date of the issue of WGS where the item can be found
Part: each issue had a part number, 1, 2 and 44 were the introduction and conclusion.  Within the remaining 41 parts I have numbered the songs starting at the top of the first column and continuing until the bottom of the last column, e.g. 3.01 is 'Knight', 43.08 is 'Come All You Saucy Landlords'
Singer: named person
Location: that given by Williams
B/C No: the prefix and number given by Bathe / Clissold

Some singers have a primary location in the Bathe / Clissold Index in one county but Williams' notes do on occasion list singers at multiple locations, Shadrach Haydon being a prime example as mentioned above.

The table which follows has been sorted alphabetically by title.
